I think the parameter we judge for judging great innings is a cruel one, ie it should lead to a victory. Cricket is a funny game in the sense that it allows the individual max expression in a team sport, this char being a unique one among other team sports. So ofet batsmen have played gloriously , but have not been able to win matches, some of the one i have seen or read about:
1) sachins innings of 130 odd in chennai against Pakistan
2) gavaskars 96 in bangalore (1987) against pakistan
3) gavaskars twin hundreds in pakistan (1978-79) against imran khan at his peak (thats when imran said, " i took 13 wickets but i would have gladly given them all up for gavaskar's)
4) sachin's gem of a hundred at Perth (1992)
5) sachin's 194 against australia in 1998(last test)
6) kapil dev's centuries in the tied test at bangalore (1986) and south africa (1992), coming and scoring at rapid rates when all seemed lost
7) how abt haydens innings against india in the chennai and kolkata tests?
8) stan mc cabe's 234 against eng, with australia following on...famously rated by bradman's the best innings he had seen.
the list can go on and on...getting back to dravid..letz see the points against him
1) he scored his first test century(148 ) against south africa -1996 (the series was already over by then...)
2) his other big overseas hundreds in nz (190 in 1999 )also failed to win matches .
3) dravid never faced bowlers of the calibre of hadlee, angus fraser, marshall, bruce reid, mcdermott. also i think sachin has faced walsh, ambrose, akram, waqar, imran, donald,..when they were at their peak. last time india went to australia...in 2000 when the pitches were much more bouncier..and mcgrath, warne, lee were at their peak...sachin was the only one who stood up to the aussies, dravid was a flop. can sachin be blamed for other people's failure to support him?
4) sachin handles warne & murali better than dravid
5) btw at headingley, sachin score 190 odd, though i admit the foundation was layed by dravid and bangar
6) i completely disagree with the fact that dravid is a better test batsman than sachin, sachin has played so well in lost causes, while dravid has always found someone to support him when he scored his big match winning innings, not so with sachin.
On present form Dravid is definitely playing better than Sachin in test matches. That i agree. Adding to that, India will win test matches when atleast 2 of its stars click, rarely ever will will one batsman guide his team to victory.
regarding the quality of bowlers gavaskar had to face...in 1971 the windies team had no good (forget great) bowlers of repute, probably gary sobers was the best of the lot.
how many indians scored against them ?? sardesai made 600 + runs in those 5 test matches, vishy also played his role, and in england tour which india won..gavaskar didnt make any significant contribution, rather it was a team effort with each batsman chipping in with 40s and 50s.
