so India finally manage to win a test match in Pakistan after 50 years of trying. I will go out on a limb and proclaim this team to be THE finest ever turned out by India. The only two competitors are the wadekar led team in the early 70's which won overseas against england & WestIndies, and the team in the mid 80's which won the World cup & world series.
lets have a look at the key players in these teams

70's
wadekar (captain): astute leader, fine left-handed batsman, with added tag of "lucky"
gavaskar (opener par excellence): naam hi kaafi hai
sardesai (gritty batsman, played in both middle order & opening positions)
solkar (extraordinarily competent at short leg..doubled the potency of the famed spin quartet, was also a handy bat and opening bolwer )
engineer (cavalier batsman and safe wicketkeeper..probably the best in the world at that time)
abid ali (opening bowler and hardy lower order bat)
visvanath (touch artiste par excellence)
the famed spin quartet of bedi, prassana, chadra and venkat

pros: deep batting line up, excellent fielders and terrific spinners, inspiring captain
cons: non-existent fast/medium bowling attack

mid 80's
gavaskar (again)
kapil ( probably india's most talented cricketer ever..)
amarnath (gritty batsman)
vengsarkar (another terrific batsman from land of shivaji parks and vada pau's)
kirmani(india's safest keeper..)
a bevy or "all-rounders" shastri, binny, madan lal

pros: deep batting line up..great fielding, good swing , sema, medium pace bowling attack
cons..too many allrounders..probably why this team shone more in ODI's rather than tests, lack of good spinners

current team
best batting line up ever . period.
sachin, dravid, laxman, ganguly, sehwag. yuvraj and chopra to support . no indian batting line up in history can match these guys
balanced bowling attck..2 good spinners in kumble & bajji, and lotsa medium pacers.srinath, zaheer, agarkar, nehra, and the enfant terrible : pathan

pros: grt batting, competent bowling, safe fielding , a very motivated and fighting bunch of players
cons: tendency to underperform in odi finals .
