Well the Indian davis cup team (?), rather a one and half man army (half coz of bhupathi relegating himself to the doubles), failed to pull it off in Japan. what was amazing was that Leander , who was struggling against a life threatening disease just 6 months back, came back and won 2 of his 3 matches. Did it require a lot of the the other players to win 1 of the remaining ones. The tragedy of tennis in India, is that the depth of players is simply not there, though Tennis enjoys quite a fan following in India, but we are just not able to produce a bunch of players who can consistently be ranked in the Top 100s, forget the Top 10s.
Maybe we are in the wrong continent, if you look around rest of Asia doesn't have that great a tennis culture. the main countries are Japan & India. Individually Japanese players have done well for themselves, Shuzo Matsuoka reached the quarter-finals of the Grand Slams, and the women contingent was quite consistent, Kimiko Date, with a couple of grand slam semi-finals to her credit being the standout. Basuki of Indonesia & now Srichapan of Thailand have been making waves at the top level. Srichapan is definitely the best Asian male player around, is he the best asian player ever, hmm..i woudln't concur..I think that honor should go to Ramanathan Krishnan.
