Black rocks!!. Its one of the best movies to have come out recently.
The Big B really went to town , screaming from every channel , every talk show, how this movie will take Indian cinema to a new level. Wether it does that or not, I dont know but the Big B and Rani do take acting to a new level. Just when I was thinking that the B had done and seen it all, he again raises the bar another foot, by a galloping, bravura performance.
Rani , with this performance proves that she is indeed the "Rani of Bollywood". For a actress with such expressive eyes, to emote with "dead eyes" is simply super. Note the Chaplinsque tributes, Rani's walk is modelled after Chaplin's style of walking and Bhansali forcefully makes us realize the connection with the Chaplin posters. Damn!!, I forget which Chaplin movie the poster advertizes.
Ok , with a great movie there are so many good things that its difficult to list them out, so instead, I will list out the things which rankled me.
- It doesnt seem and feel like a Indian movie, 60% of the dialogues are in English, even the McNally's house and their social circle seems totally out of place in Shimla or any another place in India. It will be tough for many people to associate themselves with this movie.
- Whenever there's a emotional high point in the movie (and there is a tad too much of them), the same background score plays out. A little more humour and a little less of the tragic quotient would have done wonders.
Apart from these little glitches, I think its a really great movie, right up there among the pantheon of great Indian movies. Kudos to Bhansali!! As my fav movie reviewer (in Television) , Madam Bamzai (or is it Bazmai?) says, "I give it a 4 out of 5, because I hope Sanjay makes his next movie (Bajirao Mastani, *ing Sallu-bhai, Karieena Kapoor and "the Rani") even better".
PS: the trailers of Sarkar (*ing Big & Tiny B) and Kaal (multistarrer, touted as Karan Johar's first thriller) look quite superb. Hmm... with Aamir's The Rising and Rang de Basanti also in the pipeline , maybe this will turn out to be a golden year for Bollywood.
