Saw a couple of movies over the week. "Paths of Glory" starring Kirk Douglas, baap of Michael D. A Stanley Kubrick classic, it depicts the duhumanisation caused by warfare. A very moving story. The effect is spoilt though by the tacky action scenes. I guess once you have seen "Saving Private Ryan", all other war picturisations seem pedestrian. Other one was "Sleeping Dictionary", starring the luscious Jessica Alba. The story is about a young British bearaucrat who is posted to Sarawak. The British rulers have adopted an enterprising way of learning the local lingo. They simply take a local beauty as a mistress and learn the language , ahem , in bed . The fortunate soul in this case is Hugh Dancy who gets to bed Miss Alba. Though in his defence it must be said that he ends up breaking tradition and marrying the mistress, which of course causes quite some twitches to the stiff upper lip
