Athens has seen emergence of the new guard, especially in the athletics. Wether its due to the drugs or its the simple process of change, one can only speculate. Justin Gatlin & Jeremy wariner herald the emergence of new stars from the US, wether they will be able to hold the candle to the likes of Carl Lewis & Michael Johnson, only time will tell. I cant recollect any of the Sydney winners retaining their title in Athens, just goes to show the depth , or mebbe its the drugs. Marion Jones, the undisputed star of the Athens , with an unprecedented 5 medals is also under suspicion, one after another all her boyfriends,(CJ Hunter, Tim Montgomery) have tested positive. The US holier than thou attitude takes a severe beating with its brightest stars under the cloud. I am forced to re-evaluate the performances of one of my fav women athletes- Florence Griffith Joyner whose 10.49 in the 100m and 21.34 in the 200 have stood for more than 17 years now.
The authorities have to do something fast, with such rampant drug use, Athletics is losing much of its shine, it surely used to arouse far more interest , before.
At this rate, I think a time will come when only skill based games (the racquet games, hockey, ball-games) will hold the spectator's interest as compared to say athletics & swimming which have severely disappointed its followers with such rampant drug enduced performances.
